145. Compliance Isn’t Cute… But It Might Save Your Business 🫣

Okay friends … let’s talk about the unsexy side of entrepreneurship. 😅

You know — the stuff nobody really wants to think about when they start a business. Insurance. OSHA. Payroll compliance. Workers comp. Taxes. State regulations. Employee paperwork. Terms and conditions. 🫠

We knowwwww. Trust us. We’d much rather be talking about branding, content creation, marketing strategies, and how to make your social media feed look ✨ chef’s kiss ✨.

But here’s the truth:

None of that matters if your business isn’t protected. Because when something goes wrong — and eventually, something will happen — your cute Instagram grid is not going to save you from a lawsuit, an audit, or a massive unexpected expense.

In this week’s episode of Hustled Up, we’re diving into one of the most important conversations a business owner can have: compliance, regulations, insurance, and protecting your business the right way.

And yes, we promise we tried our absolute best to make it fun. 😂

The “Boring Stuff” Actually Matters the Most

We think a lot of business owners (especially in the service industry) accidentally treat compliance like an afterthought.

We focus so much on:

  • Getting clients

  • Posting content

  • Building a brand

  • Increasing revenue

  • Growing a team

… but forget to ask:

  • Are we legally protected?

  • Are we properly insured?

  • Are we compliant with state laws?

  • Are our employees protected?

  • Are our clients protected?

Because here’s the thing: growth without protection is risky business.

You do not want to wait until after:

  • An employee gets hurt

  • Something gets damaged

  • You get audited

  • A client files a complaint

  • Or the state comes knocking 👀

… to realize you should’ve had systems in place all along.

OSHA & Workplace Safety (Yes, We’re Going There)

We know OSHA sounds scary and corporate and like something you immediately want to skip past. 😂

But honestly? OSHA exists to keep everyone safe — including you. Especially in industries like cleaning and home services, workplace safety matters way more than people realize.

Some things you should absolutely be thinking about:

  • Proper PPE

  • Chemical safety

  • Employee safety training

  • Documenting incidents

  • Safe lifting and vacuuming techniques

  • Ladder safety

  • Non-slip shoes

  • Proper chemical storage

And let’s talk about chemical mixing for a second because this one is HUGE.

Mixing chemicals improperly can be incredibly dangerous. That’s why we personally train our employees to never mix chemicals ever — period. Not “only sometimes.” Not “just if it’s safe.” Just no. 😂

Sometimes, the easiest way to keep people safe is to create super clear rules with zero gray area.

Solo Cleaners Need Protection Too

One thing we really wanted to emphasize in this episode is that this stuff is not just for large companies. Even if you’re a solo cleaner right now, this still applies to you. You still need to protect yourself.

Because if you fall off a ladder, hurt yourself, damage something expensive, or accidentally create a dangerous situation … you’re the one carrying all the risk. And honestly? A lot of us were doing wildly unsafe things when we first started. 😅

(Why were we climbing on countertops like little cleaning goblins?!)

You may not have employees yet, but building good habits and proper systems now will save you so many headaches later.

Let’s Talk Insurance (Our Least Favorite Topic Ever)

Okay. Deep breath.

Insurance.

Do we personally think insurance feels like a scam sometimes? Maybe. 😂 Is it also absolutely necessary? Unfortunately yes.

And once your business grows, you quickly realize why it matters so much.

The biggest one? General Liability Insurance. This protects your business financially if:

  • Something gets damaged

  • A client gets injured

  • An accident happens

  • Or a claim gets filed against your company

And trust us — things happen.

The longer you’re in business, the more likely you are to eventually deal with:

  • Broken items

  • Accidental damage

  • Client complaints

  • Weird accusations

  • Unexpected situations

Insurance helps protect you from one mistake becoming financially devastating.

And please hear us when we say this: the cheapest policy is not always the best policy. You need to make sure your coverage actually fits your business and the services you offer.

Bonded vs. Insured (Because They’re Different)

This is something a lot of people confuse. Insurance protects your business.

Bonding protects the client in cases involving theft or dishonesty. And while we obviously hope you hire amazing people with integrity (please do background checks 👏), bonding gives clients extra peace of mind. Honestly, clients ask about this stuff more than you’d think.

People want to know:

  • Are they protected?

  • Are your employees trustworthy?

  • Is your business legitimate?

Being bonded and insured helps build trust immediately.

Hiring Employees Comes With A LOT of Responsibility

We know hiring your first employee feels exciting. And it is exciting! 💕

But it also comes with:

  • Payroll compliance

  • Workers compensation

  • Labor laws

  • Overtime laws

  • Employee documentation

  • Onboarding paperwork

  • Required notices/posters

  • Tax requirements

  • Insurance requirements

And friends … please do not hire employees under the table. 😅

We know it can feel tempting. We know people will ask. We know it feels “easier.” But it can create massive problems later on.

Doing things properly protects:

  • You

  • Your team

  • Your clients

  • And your future business growth

Your Prices SHOULD Reflect This

One of the biggest mindset shifts we talked about in this episode is this: running a legitimate, compliant, ethical business costs money.

And that means you probably won’t be the cheapest option anymore. But honestly? That’s okay. Because when you:

  • Pay employees fairly

  • Provide protections

  • Carry insurance

  • Stay compliant

  • Offer benefits

  • Operate professionally

… you are creating a safer and more sustainable experience for everyone involved. And that matters. A lot!

Don’t Ignore the “Unsexy” Parts of Business

We get it. This stuff feels overwhelming sometimes. But these systems are what allow your business to grow sustainably without falling apart later.

So here’s your reminder to:

  • Review your policies regularly

  • Talk to professionals in your state

  • Check for updated regulations

  • Audit your systems

  • Protect your employees

  • Protect your clients

  • Protect yourself

Because at the end of the day, compliance may not be cute …

… but lawsuits definitely aren’t either. 😭

Final Thoughts 💭

This episode wasn’t meant to scare you. It was meant to empower you. You don’t know what you don’t know — and we’ve learned many of these lessons the hard way ourselves over the years.

So if listening to this episode made you realize:

“Oh crap… I need to look into that.”

Good. 😂

That means you’re growing. And the fact that you care enough to learn and improve already means you’re on the right track. Protect your business. Protect your people. Do things the right way. Future you will be very grateful. 💕
